Hire Purchase vs Finance Lease

Hire purchase and finance lease both spread the cost of using business assets, but ownership, payment structure and end-of-term treatment differ.

Question Hire purchase Finance lease
Who owns the asset during the agreement? The finance provider normally holds legal title. The provider normally retains ownership.
What happens at the end? Eventual ownership depends on completing contractual payments and any purchase option or other conditions. Check primary/secondary rental periods, sale arrangements or return obligations; do not assume automatic ownership.
What is paid upfront? Contribution/deposit, fees and applicable VAT treatment need confirmation. Initial rental, fees and VAT timing depend on the contract.
How are payments structured? Compare all instalments, any balloon/final payment and option fee. Compare all rentals and any continuing or end-of-term obligations.
What about early exit? Request the contractual settlement figure and conditions. Request the early-termination calculation and disposal/return obligations.
Who maintains and insures it? Check your obligations; ownership during finance does not remove operating costs. Confirm maintenance, insurance, use and return-condition obligations.

Hypothetical comparison method, not pricing: for the same £50,000 asset, list each proposal’s upfront cash, all instalments or rentals, final obligations and mandatory fees on a consistent VAT basis. A proposal with lower monthly payments may have a larger initial or final payment, a longer term or a different ownership outcome. Confirm VAT and accounting/tax treatment with an adviser; no universal tax-efficiency claim is made.

Read the actual hire-purchase or finance-lease agreement alongside asset-finance guidance. Align the term with useful life and model early disposal or lower resale value.

Provider assessment

Information that helps produce a useful answer

Providers set their own rates, charges, fees, security and terms. Clear evidence helps distinguish a viable route from an unsuitable application.

  • Expected period of use
  • Cash available for deposit or initial rental
  • Preferred end-of-term position
Important: The correct treatment depends on the signed agreement and the business's accounting circumstances.

NBS Finance is a broker and introducer, not a lender. NBS does not charge the client a separate broker fee. Providers set costs and terms and may carry out business or director credit checks; ask which searches will be made before a full application. An enquiry does not guarantee an offer.

HP-versus-lease questions

Does HP mean ownership from day one?

No. The provider retains legal title during the agreement; eventual ownership depends on satisfying the contract.

Do I automatically own a finance-leased asset at the end?

Do not assume so. Read the primary/secondary period, sale, return and title provisions.

Which is cheaper?

Compare the same asset, cash dates, total mandatory payments and end outcome using actual offers. A monthly figure alone cannot answer that.

Is VAT treated identically?

No single treatment is assumed. Ask the provider and your tax adviser to confirm the actual contract and timing.
