Engineering Business Finance
A precision machine shop, fabricator and project engineering contractor reach invoiceable milestones in different ways. NBS reviews the equipment investment or contract cash gap against the work, acceptance conditions and repayment evidence.
Tell us the amount, purpose and timing. NBS reviews a suitable starting route and clarifies what information is needed next. Best estimates are fine.
NBS Finance is a commercial finance broker and introducer, not a lender, and primarily supports UK limited companies. Funding is subject to provider assessment and terms. An enquiry does not guarantee an offer.
A machine purchase and a project cash gap need different evidence
For workshop investment, start with the machine and the capacity it will produce. For project cash flow, start with the contract and the point at which the customer becomes obliged to pay. Tell us whether your business earns from batch production, fabrication, installation, maintenance or a mixture.
CNC centres, lathes, cutting equipment and other identifiable machinery may suit asset finance. Design labour, tooling, subcontract processing, materials and setup costs may need separate working capital. A machinery agreement is not a general promise to fund every project expense.
Check acceptance before counting a milestone as cash
| Position | Useful evidence | Funding question |
|---|---|---|
| Design or manufacture in progress | Costed project plan and contract milestones | Is this still WIP, or has an enforceable payment stage been reached? |
| Parts delivered | Delivery record, order and customer quality acceptance | Is the invoice accepted, or subject to testing, rejects or set-off? |
| Installed or commissioned equipment | Signed milestone/commissioning evidence and payment terms | Does payment depend on further performance or final handover? |
| Maintenance already delivered | Service record and commercial invoice | Who owes the debt and are there outstanding disputes or credits? |
A stage invoice can still be conditional. Supply the full contract and acceptance process. Ordinary receivables finance should not be assumed to fund future design effort, uncompleted fabrication or disputed work. Engineering subcontractors operating under construction payment mechanisms need the construction assessment too.
CNC investment: budget beyond the machine
Include delivery, foundations where needed, electrical supply, extraction, software, tooling, training and commissioning. Check which costs the provider accepts and what contribution you need. Match the finance term to the asset’s useful life and your credible workload, not just the smallest monthly payment.
Illustrative investment budget: an £80,000 used machining centre plus £12,000 installation/tooling costs requires £92,000 before tax treatment and working-capital effects. If only the machine price is considered for asset finance, the £12,000 still needs its own funding plan, as does any required contribution. These amounts are assumptions, not a lender offer.
For used equipment, prepare serial numbers, specification, age, condition, seller details and service history. For owned machine refinance, obtain current settlement figures and check security. Valuation is not the amount you will necessarily receive.
Protect the margin when the job takes longer
Stress-test delayed customer acceptance, extra machining hours, rework and one large debtor paying late. Compare finance costs with the margin after those delivery costs. Where invoice finance is considered, establish debtor limits, exclusions, reserves, recourse and reporting responsibilities.
Ask for the full repayment profile, guarantees, security, valuation costs and early-exit obligations. Engineering assets can be specialised, and resale value may differ materially from book value. A wider working-capital loan needs sustainable cash generation rather than an assumption that the next project will arrive.
Prepare a useful funding review
- Business activity split and costed project/order pipeline
- Stage-payment and acceptance terms, delivery/quality evidence and debtor ledger
- Equipment quote, tooling/commissioning budget, ownership and settlements
- Accounts, management figures, project downside forecast and existing charges
For the first enquiry, give your company, trading history, approximate turnover, amount, purpose, timing and current facilities. Best estimates are fine; say “Not sure” where needed. You do not need every document to begin. Use business-level totals and agree a secure process before sending detailed confidential records.
NBS reviews the requirement and clarifies gaps before assessing possible routes through lenders and specialist partners. The provider decides eligibility and any offer. Read the existing enquiry’s privacy notice and sharing authorisation before submission.
Engineering Business Finance: practical questions
Can a stage invoice qualify before final completion?
It depends on whether the contractual stage creates acceptable debt and what further obligations remain. Provide the agreement and evidence for specialist review.
Can tooling and installation be included with the machine?
Ask the provider to identify what it will fund. Soft costs or ancillary expenditure may require a contribution or separate route.
Can a bespoke machine support refinance?
Possibly, but title, condition, useful life, resale market, security and repayment capacity all matter. Historic cost alone is insufficient.

Review My Engineering Funding
Explain the business requirement, approximate amount and when the cash or asset is needed. An enquiry does not commit you to accepting finance. Ask for the complete costs, terms and responsibilities before deciding to proceed.
A loan for engineering capacity or project delivery
Separate machine purchase costs from recruitment, commissioning and cash needed before project acceptance. Show how current trading supports repayments if installation runs late or a milestone is disputed; a future contract is evidence to examine, rather than a guaranteed repayment.
For a substantial investment, use the large business-loan preparation guide alongside the asset-finance route. Requirements from around £250,000 into the millions depend on underwriting, affordability, security, lender appetite and transaction structure. No single structure is available to every engineering business.
