Haulage and Logistics Finance
Fuel bills, driver wages and maintenance arrive while customers still owe for completed loads. Review eligible transport invoices separately from buying an HGV or releasing value from an owned fleet, so the funding fits the way your haulage business earns cash.
Tell us the amount, purpose and timing. NBS reviews a suitable starting route and clarifies what information is needed next. Best estimates are fine.
NBS Finance is a commercial finance broker and introducer, not a lender, and primarily supports UK limited companies. Funding is subject to provider assessment and terms. An enquiry does not guarantee an offer.
Which haulage funding problem are you solving?
| Requirement | Starting route | Evidence that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel and payroll before B2B receipts | Invoice finance against eligible completed transport | Customer terms, proof of delivery, accepted invoices, ageing and disputes. |
| An HGV, tractor unit or trailer | Commercial vehicle asset finance | Vehicle quotation, specification, age/condition, deposit and repayment capacity. |
| Cash tied up in vehicles already owned | Asset refinance | Title, current valuation, settlement and existing security. Value is not net cash. |
Fuel, tolls, tyres, insurance, driver pay and repairs need dated forecast lines. Adding trucks can increase those costs before the extra customer receipts arrive. The useful question is how much headroom covers the gap after the existing facility has been drawn.
From completed load to eligible transport invoice
Identify the legal customer: it might be a manufacturer, retailer, freight forwarder, pallet network or another haulier. Supply the transport terms and the delivery evidence that supports payment. A missing POD, shortage claim, rate dispute or unapproved surcharge can delay acceptance or reduce the funded amount.
Show your largest customers, their payment history and any connected accounts. A ledger concentrated on one customer can still be reviewed, but debtor limits and reserves may restrict availability. Cash-on-delivery or direct consumer work does not create the same B2B debtor book.
Invoice finance may bring forward part of eligible receipts. Factoring can include collections support; discounting normally leaves more ledger responsibility with you. Confidentiality, verification and where customers pay depend on the agreement. Bad-debt protection is optional and conditional, not cover for every disputed load.
Illustration: a larger limit can still leave a fuel gap
Hypothetical arithmetic, not an advance or fee quotation: a £100,000 transport ledger includes £15,000 of disputed or otherwise excluded balances, leaving £85,000 before further eligibility checks. Assume 80% availability: £68,000. Subtract an assumed £5,000 reserve and £50,000 already drawn: £13,000 remains before charges. A £20,000 fuel/payroll requirement would still leave at least a £7,000 gap.
All percentages and reserves in this illustration are assumptions. Compare actual usable cash, not the facility ceiling. If you already use factoring or discounting, review the current facility before assuming that switching alone solves the shortfall. Notice, exit costs and security releases matter.
Fleet growth needs operating headroom too
HGV and trailer finance should be assessed against the work, vehicle condition, expected mileage, maintenance and useful life. A lower monthly payment can come with a longer commitment or final payment; compare the complete agreement and total cost. Losing the asset after default can disrupt the work that repays the facility.
For fleet refinance, show each vehicle’s owner, settlement, age and condition. Deduct settlement and costs from any proposed advance. Vehicles under hire or owned by another group company cannot simply be offered as your own collateral.
Where operator licensing applies, funding and vehicle expansion must fit the licence and financial-standing requirements. Do not assume an invoice facility automatically proves financial standing. Check the Traffic Commissioner’s current evidence requirements for your operation; this page does not give a licensing decision.
Prepare a useful funding review
- Monthly transport invoice value, unpaid ledger, payment terms, POD process and disputes
- Largest customers and concentration, weekly fuel/driver costs and next cash pinch point
- Vehicle/trailer quote or fleet schedule, ownership and settlement figures
- Accounts, forecasts, existing invoice and fleet facilities, security and applicable licence position
For the first enquiry, give your company, trading history, approximate turnover, amount, purpose, timing and current facilities. Best estimates are fine; say “Not sure” where needed. You do not need every document to begin. Use business-level totals and agree a secure process before sending detailed confidential records.
NBS reviews the requirement and clarifies gaps before assessing possible routes through lenders and specialist partners. The provider decides eligibility and any offer. Read the existing enquiry’s privacy notice and sharing authorisation before submission.
Haulage and Logistics Finance: practical questions
Can a haulier with one main customer enquire?
Yes, explain the concentration and contract. Whether that customer supports funding and on what terms is a provider decision.
Can I refinance a truck still on hire purchase?
Potentially, where acceptable equity remains and the current agreement can be settled with the necessary releases. The settlement and costs reduce usable cash.
Does invoice finance fund a load before delivery?
Do not assume so. Ordinary receivables funding needs eligible evidenced debt. New-contract fuel and payroll before eligible invoices exist need a separate plan.

Review My Haulage Funding Options
Explain the business requirement, approximate amount and when the cash or asset is needed. An enquiry does not commit you to accepting finance. Ask for the complete costs, terms and responsibilities before deciding to proceed.
Borrowing for a larger transport contract or expansion
Keep vehicle purchases separate from fuel, drivers, insurance and maintenance needed before the new work pays. Show the contract margin after those costs, expected customer payment dates and repayments on the existing fleet. A new contract can increase turnover while reducing cash headroom.
For a £250,000 or larger operating or expansion requirement, review large business loans alongside invoice and vehicle-finance options. Requirements into the millions need individual underwriting and depend on affordability, available security, lender appetite and structure. A larger request is not a promise of unsecured borrowing or combined facilities.
