Invoice Discounting

Invoice discounting releases funding against eligible unpaid B2B invoices while the business usually retains day-to-day credit control and collections.

NBS Finance is a broker and introducer, not a lender. An enquiry does not guarantee an offer.

How much does invoice discounting cost?

Invoice discounting costs usually combine a service or administration fee with a discount charge on funding used. Minimum, setup and other charges may also apply. The total depends on your business, debtor ledger and facility terms; NBS does not set lender rates. Compare a written breakdown rather than one headline percentage.

Ask which charges are based on turnover, invoice value or money drawn, how often they are collected, and whether VAT applies. A quoted rate alone does not show the full cost.

Invoice discounting fees to compare

  • Service or administration fee: for operating and monitoring the facility, often linked to eligible turnover; the charging basis varies.
  • Discount charge / funding interest: charged on funds used for the time outstanding. Check the reference rate, margin and calculation basis.
  • Minimum fees: a minimum service charge or usage commitment may apply even in quieter months.
  • Setup and documentation fees: ask about arrangement, legal, audit and renewal costs.
  • Other lender-specific charges: check transfer, credit-protection, overdue and termination charges where applicable.

Exact pricing depends on the lender and facility. See the commercial finance costs and rates guide for comparing offers across products.

Example invoice discounting cost

Illustration only — not a quote, lender rate or promise. Suppose a provider accepts a £50,000 invoice and agrees an illustrative 80% advance. The business could draw £40,000, with £10,000 retained until the customer pays, subject to deductions and the facility terms.

The cost is the service/admin charge on the agreed basis, plus the discount charge on money drawn for the days outstanding, plus any applicable fixed or minimum fees. If the annual discount rate is R, a simple illustration is £40,000 × R × days outstanding ÷ 365. The actual provider may use a different day-count or charging basis. On payment, the advance is cleared and the remaining balance is released after applicable deductions. No fee percentage is assumed here; request the provider’s figures to calculate the net amount received.

What affects invoice discounting rates?

Providers price the risk and work involved in your ledger. Turnover, invoice values, invoice numbers, facility size and payment terms affect usage and administration. Debtor quality, late payments, disputes and debtor concentration affect collectability.

Your trading history, credit profile, financial performance and credit-control systems also matter. Selective versus ongoing funding, security and the lender’s structure change how charges are calculated. For a substantial ledger, review large invoice finance facilities.

Invoice discounting vs factoring costs

Invoice discounting usually leaves collections with your business. Invoice factoring normally includes provider-managed credit control, so its service fee can reflect that extra work. Discounting is not automatically cheaper overall: compare funding charges, minimums, protection, exit costs and the value of the service.

Selective vs whole-turnover invoice discounting

A whole-turnover facility covers the agreed eligible ledger on an ongoing basis. Selective or spot invoice finance focuses on chosen invoices or customers; it may suit an occasional gap but does not necessarily cost less per invoice. Confirm whether the proposed selective structure is discounting or factoring and who manages collections.

Is invoice discounting worth the cost?

It may be worthwhile when earlier access to invoice receipts supports profitable work, payroll or supplier payments and the benefit exceeds the full facility cost. Test the margin on the work being funded and a scenario where customers pay late. Ongoing fees, minimum charges, reporting duties and suitability requirements can outweigh the benefit for a small or irregular ledger.

Provider assessment

Information that helps produce a useful answer

The provider assesses the business, eligible B2B ledger, debtor quality and concentration, invoice disputes, payment history and reporting. It also reviews whether your team can manage collections and reconcile the ledger reliably. Availability and terms remain subject to its assessment.

  • Aged debtor report and ledger controls
  • Invoice quality and proof of delivery
  • Financial information and current facility details
Important: Disclosure, confidentiality, advance level and reporting requirements depend on the provider.

Question Why it matters
What exact outcome must the finance achieve? It keeps the proposal tied to a commercial purpose.
What is the full cost and repayment profile? Compare fees, security, frequency, total repayable amount and exit terms.
What happens if income arrives later than expected? A downside view tests whether repayments remain manageable.
Which documents or conditions remain outstanding? Approval, completion and payment are separate stages.

Common questions

Invoice Discounting FAQs

How much does invoice discounting cost?

Invoice discounting costs usually combine a service or administration fee with a discount charge on funding used. Minimum, setup and other charges may also apply. The total depends on your business, debtor ledger and facility terms; NBS does not set lender rates. Compare a written breakdown rather than one headline percentage.

What percentage of an invoice can be released?

The provider agrees an advance against eligible invoices. It depends on the ledger, debtor quality, concentration and facility terms; excluded invoices and reserves can reduce the cash available. The 80% example above is illustrative, not an NBS offer.

Are there minimum fees?

Some facilities have minimum service fees or usage commitments. Ask for the amount, period and treatment of quieter months before agreeing.

Are invoice discounting fees tax deductible?

Some business finance costs may qualify for tax relief, but treatment depends on the charge, facility and company circumstances. Ask your accountant to confirm deductibility, timing and VAT treatment; do not assume every fee is deductible.

Is invoice discounting cheaper than factoring?

Its service fee may be lower because the business retains collections, but total cost depends on funding, minimums and other terms. Include your own credit-control costs when comparing.

Can I switch invoice finance providers?

A switch may be possible, subject to a new provider’s assessment and the existing agreement. Check notice periods, termination fees, settlement, security release and the handover of customer payments.

Do I need a personal guarantee?

A provider may request a personal guarantee or other security. Requirements and the extent of liability vary; review the written terms and obtain independent advice before signing.

Is invoice discounting confidential?

Some facilities are confidential, but invoice discounting is not automatically undisclosed. Ask about customer notification, payment arrangements and circumstances in which disclosure may be required.

Does NBS charge a separate broker fee?

No. NBS Finance does not charge the client a separate broker fee. Finance providers set their own charges and terms.

Credit control, confidentiality and costs

Invoice discounting normally leaves day-to-day collections with your business. It does not automatically mean customers are unaware of the arrangement: disclosure and payment arrangements depend on the facility. Confidential invoice discounting is a specific arrangement designed to keep the facility undisclosed in normal operation, subject to its terms.

Check the service or administration fee, the discount charge on funds used, and any arrangement, minimum or exit charges in the proposal. See how invoice-finance costs are assessed. If you need provider-managed collections, compare invoice factoring rather than choosing on the headline charge alone.
