Start-Up Commercial Vehicle Finance

Start-up commercial vehicle finance is assessed without a long trading record, so operator experience, contracts, deposit and forecasts carry greater weight.

NBS Finance is a broker and introducer, not a lender. An enquiry does not guarantee an offer.

Prepare the first vehicle and the first operating weeks

  • Founder/director experience, company structure, authority and relevant trading history.
  • Exact vehicle quotation, seller, price/VAT basis, condition, intended use and remaining life.
  • Contribution available, existing commitments and the cash retained after paying the deposit.
  • Confirmed work, contract terms, realistic utilisation and the time between first work and first customer payment.
  • Insurance, maintenance, fuel, wages, taxes and a contingency for downtime.
  • Licence and operating permissions relevant to the work; these remain separate from finance approval.

Hypothetical first-contract timeline: a vehicle is delivered in week one; insurance, fuel and wages start immediately. The first finance instalment may fall due before the first invoice is paid in week six. A signed contract does not pay the week-two costs. Model the actual dates, a delayed customer receipt and loss of the first contract before choosing an affordable structure.

Where accounts do not yet exist, the proposed provider may ask for experience, forecasts, contracts, contribution and personal/business credit evidence. It decides whether that evidence is sufficient. No-deposit, no-accounts or licence approval must not be treated as guaranteed finance. Compare truck, van, startup business and HGV preparation routes.

Choosing the first van for the business?

You can ask about finding the vehicle without applying for finance. Describe the work, budget and timing; any funding review for a newer company remains subject to its own assessment.

Provider assessment

Information that helps produce a useful answer

Providers set their own rates, charges, fees, security and terms. Clear evidence helps distinguish a viable route from an unsuitable application.

  • Director experience and licences
  • Vehicle quote and deposit
  • Contracts, routes and realistic cash-flow forecast
Important: Funding and operator licensing are separate. Availability is subject to provider assessment.

NBS Finance is a broker and introducer, not a lender. NBS does not charge the client a separate broker fee. Providers set costs and terms and may carry out business or director credit checks; ask which searches will be made before a full application. An enquiry does not guarantee an offer.

First-vehicle questions

Can I apply without company accounts?

You can explain the requirement, but acceptance depends on the provider’s evidence requirements and assessment. Experience and a forecast do not replace approval.

Is a signed transport contract enough?

No. Show margin, payment terms, operating costs, customer concentration, contribution and fallback income.

Will I need a deposit or credit checks?

Contribution, guarantees and business/director checks depend on the proposed provider. Ask for exact requirements and searches before a full application.

Does an O-licence application establish finance eligibility?

No. Licensing, financial-standing evidence and lender assessment are separate. Do not commit to a vehicle on the assumption one guarantees the other.
